چکیده
The difficulties with and controversies surrounding the interpretation of electrophysiological data were highlighted in the recent Perspectives on Ion Permeation through membrane-spanning channels. The main issue was whether such data are more appropriately analyzed within the framework of chemical kinetics (Eyring’s Transition State Theory; Eyring, 1935) or the continuum electrodiffusional approach (Nernst-Planck Theory and its more modern extensions; see, e.g., Nonner et al., 1998). Cogent arguments were presented for both viewpoints. Their importance is in the physical insights each can generate. In the most commonly used treatments of kinetic modeling found in the physiological literature, the Eyring expression for the rate constant is presented as:

Letter to the Editor Forces Determining Ion Permeation
I would like to address two key issues related to the Perspectives on Ion Permeation . The first is the estimate of the size of the physical forces relevant for ion transport. Any good physical model of ion permeation requires the identification of the dominant forces. The second subject concerns a careful definition of the terms “mean field” and “mean field approximation.” Several articles in ...
متن کاملHybrid Molten/Solid In2O3-Bi2O3 Oxygen Ion Transport Membranes
The hybrid molten/solid In2O3 - 30-48 wt.% Bi2O3 oxide materials were studied with respect to their transport properties. The conductivities, oxygen ion transport numbers and oxygen permeation fluxes have been measured by using the four-probe DC, volumetric measurements of the faradaic efficiency and gas flow techniques, respectively. We show that the...
متن کاملAdsorption Equilibrium and Kinetics of Lead Ion onto Synthetic Ferrihydrites
Batch experiments were conducted to study the adsorption behaviors of lead ion (Pb2+) onto ferrihydrites prepared using three different procedures which were characterized by textural analysis (BET). The adsorption removal of Pb2+ by the three ferrihydrites (called FH-1, FH-2 and FH-3, respectively) were compared, and FH-3 shows fast adsorption kinetics as well as hig...
متن کاملEsterification Reaction Kinetics Using Ion Exchange Resin Catalyst by Pseudo-Homogenous and Eley-Ridel Models
This work deals with kinetics and chemical equilibrium studies of esterification reaction of ethanol with acetic acid. The esterification reaction was catalyzed by an acidic ion exchange resin (Amberlyst-15) using a batch stirred tank reactor. The pseudo-homogenous and Eley-Rideal models were successfully fitted with experimental data. At first, Eley-Rideal model was examined for heterogeneous...
